Team Germany (Technische Universität Darmstadt)Solar House to Solar Decathlon

In September of 2009 Logistics Group International Inc. in a collaborative effort was contracted to arrange the transportation for Team Germany (Technische Universität Darmstadt)Solar House. Team Germany was asked to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. Twenty University’s from around the nation and around the world compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered houses. The competition lasts for three weeks and takes place on the National Mall in Washington D.C.

Logistics Group International was responsible for safe transport of the Team Germany Solar House to Washington D.C. from the Port of Norfolk, VA where it first made contact with U.S. soil. The Team Germany Solar House left the port of Bremerhaven Germany bound of Norfolk, VA. The German Solar house was broken down into 4 pieces or modules that would be connected together to form the German Solar House. Two pieces were 38’3”L x 12’5”W x 13’2”H, 39,683 lbs. each and two other pieces were 38’3”L x 12’5“W x 8’6”H, 26,455 lbs. Each, with three full containers of parts and supplies . The modules arrived to the National Mall on September 30th at midnight and were quickly assembled for the competition. For the second year in a row, Team Germany took first place in the Solar Decathlon. After the celebration, the modules were loaded back on the LGI trucks and delivered to the Port of Norfolk for their long trip back to Germany.
