| *53' semi-trailers must have no more than a maximum of 41' from center of kingpin to center or rear tandem on trailer or center rear most axle. A semi-trailer of 53' is required to be equipped with rear under ride guard of substantial construction consisting of a continuous lateral beam extending to within 4" of each side of the trailer and located a maximum of 22" from the surface as measured with the vehicle empty and on a level surface. | ||
EXEMPTIONS
Farm equipment up to 18' wide does not require a permit when moved on its own wheels.
Poles, pipes or beams are exempt on designated highways as long as trailer does not exceed
53' long with less than 14' overhang.

PERMITS VALID FOR:
Single trip permits are valid for ten (10) calendar days, may get a return trip but it must be
requested at the time of application.
OPERATING TIME
Sunrise to sunset, 6 days a week for permitted vehicles, loads not exceeding 112,000 lbs, legal
dimensions may have continuous travel.
WEEKEND TRAVEL
Travel permitted sunrise to sunset on Saturday, no travel allowed on Sunday. Permitted vehicle
combinations not exceeding 112,000 gross vehicle weight and legal dimensions will be granted
continuous travel seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

EXCEPTIONS
Blades may be hauled attached as long as the width does not exceed 14', a blade which has been
removed may be hauled with the equipment without being considered a divisible load.
INFORMATION NEEDED TO ORDER A WIDE LOAD, OVERSIZE AND HEAVY HAUL PERMITS:
Name and address of registered owner of power unit, unit license number, last 5 digits of VIN
number, description of load, date of move, point-of-entry to and point-of-exit from state highway
system, desired routes, dimensions and gross weight. Self-propelled equipment requires schematics
and axle weights and amount of overhang. FID number required for companies Social Security number
required for individuals.

Restricted Travel
Loads over 12' wide travel restricted within a 10 mile radius of the following cities: Charlotte,
Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill from 7:00 - 9:00 am and 4:00 - 6:00 pm

Overweight, Oversized & Wideload SuperLoads
Anything above normal permit issue may be considered as super load. (Weights in excess of
132,000 lbs, over 68,000 lbs per 4 or more axle grouping, width over 15’), fee $100 review fee
plus $3.00 per 1,000 lbs over 132,000 gross weight, $12 for each over legal dimension, travel
from sunrise to sunset Monday through Saturday.
Applications including drawings, company name, weight on each axle, distance between each axle,
overall dimensions and requested route of travel, requires a minimum of 10 working days to process,
