OPERATING TIME
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset unless prohibited under Restricted Travel Section.

WEEKEND TRAVEL
Travel is permitted one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset on Saturday and Sunday

DIVISIBLE LOADS
Loads must be stripped down as far as possible, may haul certain commodities when it doesn’t create overweight, over width or over length

EXCEPTIONS
When hauling a dozer the blade and/or side boom may be removed and hauled on the same vehicle.

Vehicles transporting pipe loaded across a vehicle rather than lengthwise will be eligible for over width permits as long as the width of the vehicle and load does not exceed 8’8”

Vehicles transporting oversize loads only will be allowed to create an over height load as long as there is at least one permit dimension and all the dimensions for the load are shown on the permit Over width and over length dimensions may never be created

INFORMATION NEEDED TO ORDER A WIDE LOAD, OVERSIZE AND HEAVY HAUL PERMIT
Vehicle make, model, tractor license, trailer license, commodity being hauled including make, model, serial number, date for the move to begin, origin, destination, routes, overall dimensions, overhang, axle weights, number of axles and gross weight.

Make, model and serial numbers must be provided for construction equipment such as draglines, dozers, backhoes, generators and tractors.

ESCORTS FOR WIDE LOAD & OVERSIZED SHIPPING

An escort vehicle may escort two over length vehicles but only one over width vehicle
*Private escorts must have a "LA approved escort vehicle permit" that may be purchased from any weights and standards police officer) at stationary scales) - proper equipment is required

*For escorts domiciled outside of Louisiana, a 48-hour trip permit is required for intrastate movements (trip permit is $25, available at port of entry)

*Louisiana-based escort drivers must carry commercial plates and have D or E operator's license


Restricted Travel

Loads over 12’ wide restricted on interstate in Shreveport, Monroe, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans between 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Permitted loads may not cross any bridge spanning the Mississippi River or be within 2 miles between 6:30 – 9:00 a.m. and from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in New Orleans, vehicles and loads requiring a permit are prohibited from traveling during weather which is physically severe such as extremely heavy rain, heavy fog, icy road conditions, heavy snow or any continuous conditions which create low visibility for drivers or hazardous conditions.

GUIDELINE FOR SUBMITTING OVERWEIGHT VEHICLE CONFIGURATIONS EXCEEDING 238,000 POUNDS

Submit a drawing of the assembled vehicle showing:
The location of the centerline of each axle
The spacing and size of the wheels on each axle
The tire (unloaded tractor/trailer combination) weight of each axle in pounds
The location of the kingpin of the trailer
The location of the kingpin of each jeep combination
The width and length of the flat bed (if applicable)
The location of the load on the hauling combination – including tractor(s)
The height of the load on the hauling combination
Submit a drawing showing:
The outside dimensions of the load to be hauled which should show side and end elevations and plan views
The weight of the load and the total weight for each axle in pounds
The center of gravity of the load
Submit a map showing the proposed route and any alternate proposed routes in
order of preference
